Ground Cover Spacing
Choosing how far your ground covers should be spaced when planting depends on a number of factors – what look you want, the size of the plant, growing conditions, budget, and more. Generally ground cover plants are spaced 6-12” apart. The distance between the plants is based on the size of the plants used, the expected growth rate and the budget that the installer has to work with. Here is how it is calculated:
Sq ft of job ÷ sq ft per plant = number of plants required |
Example: 1,000 square feet using 32ct flats planted on 6” centers |
1,000 sq ft ÷ 25 – 4,000 plants |
4,000 plants ÷ 32 = 125 flats |
Recommended Plant Spacing
Spacing | Common Plant Sizes | Square Feet Per Plant |
---|---|---|
6” centers | 48 ct, 32 ct | .25 sq ft |
8” centers | 48 ct, 32 ct | .44 sq ft |
10” centers | 32 ct, 24 ct, | 18 ct .69 sq ft |
12” centers | 32 ct, 24 ct, 18 ct, 15 | ct 1.00 sq ft |
15” centers | 18 ct, 15ct | 1.56 sq ft |
18” centers | #1, #2, #3 container | 2.25 sq ft |
24” centers | #1, #2, #3 container | 4 sq ft |
